Career Pivot

A course can be useful. It is not a job.

Anyone thinking of a switch is offered courses, bootcamps, certificates and degrees, often with confident promises. This session helps participants decide whether a course is what their move needs, how to check what is on offer, and how to find out cheaply before paying.

A course is the easiest part of a career switch to buy, and the easiest to over-value.

Enrolling feels like progress. It is a visible step, it has a start date, and it puts a name on what you are doing. Providers know this, and many advertise outcomes that no course can guarantee, because a course does not decide who gets hired.

Some courses are good, and for some moves a qualification really is required. Teaching, medicine, law, accountancy and some regulated technical fields cannot be entered without one. In many other fields, employers look at what you can show you can do.

The session does not recommend or criticise any provider. It teaches participants to ask the questions that separate a useful course from an expensive one, and to try a smaller thing first.

How to decide, and what to check

35 topics across 7 areas. Seven parts: whether, which kind, how to check, and what to do first.

What Gap Are You Trying to CloseA course should solve a specific problem.5
  • Which skills the target role asks for that you do not have
  • Whether the gap is knowledge, practice, a required credential or a network
  • Whether employers in that field ask for a particular qualification
  • How people in the role actually got in, asked of people in the role
  • Whether a project would close the gap more cheaply

If you cannot say what the course will change on your resume or in an interview, wait until you can.

Kinds of ProgrammeThey are not the same thing.5

Each costs a different amount of money, time and credibility, and means something different to an employer. A short course is a test. A degree is a commitment of years.

  • Short online courses, free or paid, for a single skill
  • Professional certifications, from a body or a technology company
  • Bootcamps and multi-month programmes run by private providers
  • Part-time and online degrees and diplomas
  • Full-time degrees, such as an MBA or master's
Checking RecognitionFor degrees and diplomas, check the source.5

Rules and lists are updated, so check the official source at the time you enrol, and keep a copy of what you saw. A provider's own claim of approval is not the same as the regulator's list.

  • Whether the institution is a university or institute recognised by the relevant authority
  • For online and distance degrees in India, the UGC publishes lists of institutions entitled to offer them; check the current list on the UGC website
  • Whether the programme itself, not only the institution, is on that list
  • For professional fields, the regulator or council that decides who may practise
  • Whether employers you are aiming at accept the qualification
Questions to Ask Any ProviderAnd what a straight answer looks like.5
  • Who teaches, and what they have actually done in the field
  • What you will have built or produced by the end
  • What the total cost is, including fees, taxes, exams and interest on any loan
  • What the refund terms are, in writing
  • What happened to previous participants, and how you could verify it for yourself

Be careful with 'placement guarantee' and 'income share' claims. Read the full terms, including who qualifies and what counts as a placement.

Warning SignsPatterns worth slowing down for.5
  • Pressure to pay today for a discount that ends tonight
  • Outcomes promised for everybody
  • Reviews you cannot trace to real people
  • Vague answers on cost, instructors or refund terms
  • Finance arranged by the provider that you do not fully understand
Cheaper Ways to Test FirstBefore any large payment.5
  • Free introductory material from universities and public platforms
  • India's government SWAYAM platform offers courses free to learn from; check the current fee for any proctored exam or certificate
  • A weekend project in the new field
  • Reading real job descriptions and noting what repeats
  • Talking to two or three people who do the job
Paying for ItWithout letting it become the problem.5
  • Whether your employer will fund any part of it, and with what conditions
  • Avoiding loans for a short programme you have not tested
  • Time cost: hours per week you can really keep up
  • What happens to your current job if you fall behind
  • A stopping point if it is not working

Common mistakes

  • Buying a course before knowing the role
  • Treating a certificate as the finish line
  • Taking a loan for something untested
  • Believing outcome claims without any way to check them
  • Collecting many short courses with nothing built
  • Assuming a degree from any provider is accepted

What participants leave with

  • A one-page checklist for judging a programme
  • The official place to check a degree's recognition
  • A free or low-cost first step
  • Questions to put to any provider in writing
  • A decision rule for enrolling, waiting or skipping

How the session runs

A short walkthrough of the checklist, followed by real examples of course pages that participants pick themselves and read together for what they claim, what they leave out and what to ask. People who took a course as part of a switch describe what it gave them and what it did not. No provider presents. Evening or weekend sessions, in person or online.

What your students leave with

  • A test for whether a course fits the gap you actually have
  • A checklist for judging a course, bootcamp or certificate before paying
  • Knowing how to check whether a degree is recognised
  • Cheaper and free ways to test interest first
  • A way to ask about outcomes that gets real answers
  • A decision on whether to enrol, wait or try something else
